Dusty Cellars Winery is a small family owned and operated winery on Camano Island! We are proud to offer some of the best hand crafted boutique wines in the area. Founded in September 2006, our philosophy is simple: Find the best fruit we can, put all the energy possible into each and every lot, and enjoy these fine wines with some of the best people in the world!
When harvest arrives ( since Mother Nature is never an exact science ), so goes the trek over the beautiful fall colored mountains of I-90, four to five times per year to the Columbia Valley with trailer and crusher in tow! Once there, we decide whether to crush the fruit on site or bring it back home. Generally we crush all the red wines at the source so the yeast can be added right away and the mixing on the ride home can happen, but that is after all the clean up has taken place of the crusher and press pad. The white wines will be crushed at our facility so there is no risk of browning on the juice or fruit. Sometimes it takes until midnight and beyond to complete the process. Definitely does not seem to be so romantic when you are elbow deep in crushed grape skins and it is 1:00 am in the morning, but it is all for the love of the grape and that beautifully fermented juice!
After the fermentation process has finished with the white wines, we transfer them to plastic containers, sulfite them to stabilize, and seal the lids to ensure there is no contact with oxygen. Our reds will encounter the secondary fermentation in barrels and last most of the winter before a one time racking to separate the lees from our precious juice. Then after an exhausting few months of sampling:), we will determine the appropriate time to bottle and invite some family and friends over for an all day bottling. Everything is done by hand. Yes, by hand! Filling, corking, foil caps and labeling! Boxes are taped and labels are placed onto them-we’re ready to share our hard work with all of those who appreciate wine.
We are very devoted to our winemaking and the shear love of sharing what we have made with each and every person that we can share our wine with. Once fall has arrived, we will start the process all over again. It is a reward that what we will craft, will be shared with many people from this area and beyond. So here’s to a new vintage, a great bottle of wine from Dusty Cellars, and cheers to anyone who wants to share in our journey from the vine to the bottle!
